I just love a story with a happy ending!

Intrusion Suspect Allegedly Threatens 82-Year-Old Homeowner, Gets Shot Dead

An armed 82-year-old man in Kanawha County, West Virginia, turned the tables on a home intrusion suspect Saturday by pulling a gun and shooting him dead.

The deceased suspect was identified as 24-year-old Timothy Dean Coker.
According to WSAZ, Kanawha County deputies say Coker allegedly “broke in through a window in the garage where the 82-year-old homeowner was working and threatened the homeowner.”
The homeowner responded by pulling a handgun and shooting the suspect, fatally wounding him.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner and none are expected.

Why I want to leave the once Great State of California

What’s the Matter with California?

(Capt. Stephen Horner /Orange County Fire Authority via AP)

This just in from what was once the best state in the Union:

Guess which state has the highest poverty rate in the country? Not Mississippi, New Mexico, or West Virginia, but California, where nearly one out of five residents is poor.

That’s according to the Census Bureau’s Supplemental Poverty Measure, which factors in the cost of housing, food, utilities and clothing, and which includes non cash government assistance as a form of income.

Given robust job growth and the prosperity generated by several industries, it’s worth asking why California has fallen behind, especially when the state’s per-capita GDP increased approximately twice as much as the U.S. average over the five years ending in 2016 (12.5%, compared with 6.27%).

The Left’s first, last and only instinct is to throw more money at the problem, but California’s already done that. and guess what?

It’s not as though California policymakers have neglected to wage war on poverty. Sacramento and local governments have spent massive amounts in the cause.

Several state and municipal benefit programs overlap with one another; in some cases, individuals with incomes 200% above the poverty line receive benefits.

California state and local governments spent nearly $958 billion from 1992 through 2015 on public welfare programs, including cash-assistance payments, vendor payments and “other public welfare,” according to the Census Bureau. California, with 12% of the American population, is home today to about one in three of the nation’s welfare recipients.

The generous spending, then, has not only failed to decrease poverty; it actually seems to have made it worse.

The progressives who control every aspect of the state’s government are not necessarily stupid people, but they are malign.

They understand that increasing welfare spending only encourages the arrival of more recipients on whom to spend it, and the high likelihood that those new constituents will vote Democrat as soon as they are able, legally or otherwise.

Already, some 55 percent of “immigrants” receive means-tested benefits, while only 30 percent of native Californians do so.

California’s army of bureaucrats contributes as well, as does the state’s highly restrictive land-use ordinances and environmental restrictions, which drive up the cost of housing in what is already the nation’s most expensive real-estate market:

With 883,000 full-time-equivalent state and local employees in 2014, California has an enormous bureaucracy.

Many work in social services, and many would lose their jobs if the typical welfare client were to move off the welfare rolls.

Further contributing to the poverty problem is California’s housing crisis. More than four in 10 households spent more than 30% of their income on housing in 2015.

A shortage of available units has driven prices ever higher, far above income increases. And that shortage is a direct outgrowth of misguided policies.

They’re not “misguided” — in fact, they’re doing exactly what the progressives designed them to do.

Higher housing prices means more money in the pockets of Angelenos and San Franciscans when they go to sell, high energy prices have a disproportionate impact on the poor, generous welfare “benefits” mean an endless supply of new Democrats and permanent employment for the public-employee unions who actually run the state.

It’s a perfect racket, and one that will continue unless and until the California Republicans get their act together and begin vigorously contesting what has become a one-party state designed to enrich those at the top, beggar the middle class, and keep those on the bottom in permanent penury.

How to Spot a Concealed Handgun

A Manly Guest Contributor | October 21, 2016

Gun Skills & SafetyManly SkillsTactical Skills

100-deadly-survival_final

CONOP: Concept of Operations; COA: Course of Action; BLUF: Bottom Line Up Front

Individuals who carry a handgun professionally are well attuned to the range of mannerisms that can indicate the presence of a concealed weapon within their vicinity. Civilians, too, can learn to familiarize themselves with these signs and signals. When combined with suspicious behavior, the suspected presence of a concealed weapon should put bystanders on high alert.
Body Language: People carrying handguns tend to subconsciously telegraph the location of the weapon via their body language. They may reflexively palpate the gun to make sure the weapon is still safely in its holster, subtly re-position the weapon prior to sitting or standing, or shift their weight away from nearby bystanders to avoid accidental contact with or theft of the weapon.
Asymmetry: Another telltale sign is asymmetry in clothing. Guns are heavy and bulky, and thus will betray signs of their presence to anyone who’s paying attention. An outside-the-waistband holster may cause a visible midline bulge, while an ankle holster may cause a bulge or tightening of the fabric at the lower leg. A gun held in a jacket pocket will weight down one side of the jacket unevenly.
Environment: Hot or inclement weather can make concealed weapons easier to spot. Rain, wind, or sweat can reveal the outline of a gun, which will generally be much easier to hide under multiple layers of cold-weather clothing.
Negligence: Weapons are also frequently exposed due to temporary negligence, flashed or inadvertently dropped as a gunman reaches for his wallet. Dropped weapons are an all-too-common scenario at public urinals, where inexperienced perpetrators may thoughtlessly unzip their pants — thereby releasing the tension that was holding up the holster.

Dear Grumpy Advice on Teaching in Today's Classroom

How to start a career in Education Part 3

Okay so you aced the interview & nailed down the job! Congrats & well done Old Boy!
Now what?
Well the Principal is going to call the District and tell them that they hired you. So off you go to Corporate Headquarters & Human Resources*.
When you do go. Make very sure that you have all your paperwork squared away. The School Secretary can help if you are really nice to them by the way.
The key things are a copy of all your College Transcripts, Teacher Credentials and other Certificates. As they will determine your place on the pay scale.
Hint -you want to be on the far right side and down as far as possible on this chart. So see if your Substitute Teaching time can be credited to it under experience. This can make your pay check a bit bigger by the way.
So anyways you are going to due a huge amount of paperwork. Get used to it as you have just joined the Civil Service.
Be smart and do some research on Health Insurance so that it will fit your needs. Also you can get your spouse & kids on this.  I like Kaiser- Permanente myself but to each his own I say!
Then you will be sent to an orientation briefing. Where they will try and scare the snot out of you. Just don’t sweat it.
This will be followed by going back to YOUR School and meeting your Department Chair. Who will then assign you your classroom. Then on with a side trip to the Textbook room for your students books for them to sign for later on.
Hopefully you will have a day or so to set up and decorate your classroom. Before the flood of students arrive.
More later on, Good Luck & Hunting!

  • HR can be your worst nightmare as they are the ones who will “Investigate” any misconduct that might come your way. Be very wary of these folks and avoid if possible. They will also be the ones to screw up your pay & benefits.
