I’m willing to bet that he is not the designated sniper

I’m willing to bet he’s the sniper spotter; shoots a couple rounds, enemy sniper shoots him and the anti sniper team drop a grenade or two on the sniper.

Works great, you get to exchange the village inbred idiot for a skilled sniper and you get console his widow / goat.
