One of my all time favorite Movies – Zulu, which tell the story of the Defense of Rourke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
If you are in the military, this can be a great primer also. If one wants to learn how to hold a position against great odds.
Plus it shows how great leadership is a force multiplier. For example Lt. Chard & Bromhead with the stout aid of Colour Sgt.Frank Edward Bourne . (Who later on rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel!!)
That and it shows a lot of the Martini Rifle and what it can do with a good man behind it. Which frankly is a lot!
Anyways – If you have not see the film. I most highly recommend either seeing it or get the DVD. Its just a real pity that you will not be able to see it on the Movie Screen. Since it is probably considered very UN-PC & Racist to boot. Pity!
He’s a senior NCO in the Delta Force. SGM Payne enlisted in 2002, serving as a sniper in the 75th Ranger Regiment until 2007, when he joined the Delta Force.

In 2015, then-SFC Payne’s unit was deployed to Iraq to help combat ISIS. His unit advised and trained the newly formed Kurdish Counter Terrorist Group. One day, fresh graves are seen outside of a known ISIS prison. The joint team is given the green light.
Payne’s team arrives with the CTG at night time. Upon arrival, they’re hit with volleys of gunfire. The Kurds not having conducted any operations before, are nervous and don’t move forward. The Deltas lead the way, giving their friends courage to press forward. Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler is killed leading his comrades into battle.
Meanwhile, SFC Payne and his team press into the building. They reach a bolted door that holds in the Iraqi hostages. The team attempts to break it, but there is too much fire coming their way. Payne braves the fire and breaks the bolt. The joint team then starts getting all of the hostages out. As the firefight continues, ISIS terrorists start setting off bomb vests, causing fires which cripple the building’s stability. After securing multiple hostages, they move outside.

However, plenty of hostages are left. SFC Payne keeps moving back inside to make sure no man is left behind. By doing so, he is risking getting crushed or burnt to death. At one point, a tired hostage believes he is going to die in the fire and can no longer walk to the outside. Payne helps him up and gets him outside.
Overall, due to then-SFC Payne’s actions, over 75 Iraqis are rescued. At first, he is awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest American military award. However, on September 11, 2020, SGM Payne was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military award in the US.

Delbert Waldron III, “Bert” to those that knew him, was the most accomplished U.S. sniper during the Vietnam conflict. Adelbert originally joined the U.S. Navy in 1953 where he served for twelve years and left as an E-5 in 1965. In 1968 Sgt. Waldron enlisted in the US Army as a Sergeant and headed to Vietnam as part of Company B, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry of the 9th Infantry Division. Sgt. Waldron qualified as an expert marksman and was sent to the now famous 9th ID sniper school that was run in country by the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) with the support of the 9th ID commander, General Julian Ewell. Once graduated, Sgt. Waldron then found himself back working with the Navy in the Mekong Delta in the brown water ‘Tango Boats’ and PBRs. It was in this very hostile area that Sgt. Waldron operated as a sniper.
At the end of his tour in mid 1969 the 36 year old Sgt. Waldron had 109 confirmed kills, highest among all U.S. servicemen during the Vietnam conflict. Sgt. Waldron primarily used the M-21 SWS during his time as a sniper and on occasion would use a starlight equipped M-14 or M-21 for nighttime operations. General Ewell also credited Sgt. Waldron with making a single shot confirmed kill at 900 yards from a moving Tango Boat. Adelbert ended his tour in Vietnam as a Staff Sergeant E-6 and had been awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, a Presidential Unit Citation, and two Distinguished Service Crosses.
After his time in Vietnam, Sgt Waldron taught at the US Army Marksmanship Unit before leaving the Army in 1970. He worked with several questionable contractors and eventually he divorced as well. Staff Sergeant Adelbert Waldron III died on October 18, 1995 in California at the age of 62. Not much else is known about Sgt. Waldron or his military career, which was the way he wanted it. He did not publish any books or do lectures and refused many requests for interviews, he simply did not want the notoriety for what he did. Notoriety or not, he was an excellent sniper.

A story from a different age
Here’s the story of Captain Robert Campbell, a different kind of P.O.W.
A few weeks into The First World War and he was already captured by the Germans and sent to a prison camp, far away from any atrocities.
Remember this was WWI and the Imperial German Army still treated P.O.W’s with decency and nothing else special .
In December 1916, Cambpell heard word from home about his mother dying of a disease that was beyond curable. In a desperate attempt to be beside her in her last few days, Campbell wrote directly to Kaiser Wilhelm II.
To everyone’s surprise, not only did the Kaiser accept his request, but also accorded him a full 2-weeks stay plus two travel days, only if Campbell agreed to come back.
And, as a man of honor that he was, he did came back after spending his last moments alongside his mom by crossing the no-man’s land again to his fellow inmates.
Conditions in the camp didn’t seem to be too good because he began digging an escape tunnel to get away. This scheme failed but he was liberated anyway in 1918, without experiencing the meatgrinder of the front.
Conditions? Maybe not that great. The degree of chivalry shown between the two sides? Exceptional
