An interesting picture of the two Armies Uniforms

On the left is Former US Chief of Staff General  Martin Dempsey & the former Cheif of the Israeli Army Benny Gantz. Who has been in over 8 campaigns. Notice a slight uniform difference? Grumpy

Apples and oranges. One is wearing the US Class A equivalent, the other is wearing the Israeli Class B equivalent.

True but our man looks like a Christmas Tree with a lot of “I did not get the clap for 5 months awards.”

The point being that the US Army and the other branches have gotten ridiculous about giving out medals. Especially for the Officers and Senior NCO’s group which makes them look really ridiculous.

(Hey there are only so many Patton’s or Chesty Pullers out there in the world)

Meanwhile the Junior Enlisted would be lucky if they got oh say a ARCOM in their 4 year hitch. (For the record all I got was the Gay Pride / Army Service ribbon. Since I was on weight control most of the time.)

So if I had my way on this matter. The only ribbons and other jewelry that could be worn on the uniform. Would be the C.I.B., Jump Wings, Ranger, Special Forces / Delta, Air assault, Combat Medic Badges. Oh yeah & I almost forgot, your Marksmanship awards! Like say the Presidents 100 patch.

As for the medals it would be the M.O.H., D.S.C., Silver Star, Bronze Star with V, Purple Heart and the POW Medal. Plus the “I was there, Campaign Ribbons”.

Also the patch that you wore on your last combat unit. That you would then wear on whatever the Army is now wearing in the field.

Now if you get awarded the other stuff. Well It would show up on your 201 File and on the paperwork for the Promotion Boards or your Court Martial.

However you could not be allowed to wear it on your uniform. But you could have it on your “I love me Wall”.

BUT what do I know as I was only Enlisted!

The Army now prefers to wear only two rows of ribbons with the Class A “Eisenhower” uniform. When that picture of GEN Dempsey was taken, the Army had combined (for a brief few years) the Class A uniform and the Dress Blue uniform (from about 2005-2020 the Army made a series of very poor choices on uniforms).

GEN Dempsey was not an inspiring leader, but I can count on one finger the number of inspiring GOFOs during the last few decades. I’ll note that Dempsey had a Bronze Star with “Valor” device which he received as a Division Commander during OIF I. I find it hard to imagine how a division commander could possibly receive such an award, but all of them did (with the exception of one of the most slovenly and unimpressive GOFOs I ever knew, who received a Silver Star for going for a short drive as a division commander).
