Some thoughts about when The SHTF -How Long Should You Expect to Wait For Help From the .gov After a Disaster?

It is strange to see an article about prepping in WiredThe Science Behind Home Disaster Preparedness Kits Is a Disaster.
Wired is a Left-leaning publication, so they are all upset that “You might be telling people that they have to rely on themselves and their neighbors and not the government.”
Everybody from the Feds on down agrees you need to be prepared. But not many are.

Government agencies don’t have the money to send a fire truck to every house after an earthquake or hurricane. People have to be able to help themselves.

But what to put in the kits, how many days to plan for varies widely.

A couple of years ago things got even more complicated.
In 2016 the Washington Military Department, essentially that state’s National Guard, ran an exercise called Cascadia Rising.
The idea was to simulate a response to an earthquake and subsequent tsunami emanating from the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the Pacific Northwest, subject of a much-read New Yorker article from the previous year. “Cascadia Rising was a massive eye-opener,” says Karina Shagren, spokesperson for the Washington Military Department.
“We realized there would be pockets of communities that won’t receive help for several days, if not several weeks.”
Washington’s coastal communities would lose the bridges that connect them to the rest of the world. They’d have to wait for help by air or sea.

Washington State now recommends that you are prepared to be on your own for 14 days. The Federal .gov is still saying “more than 3 days.” Most people aren’t even prepared for that.
Wired gets wound up in Social Justice, worried that poor people can’t afford to prepare. But canned food, if you rotate through things you like doesn’t have to cost any extra.
You don’t need to buy expensive dehydrated food. Yes, if you need to evacuate, cans are heavy, but do your kids have a wagon? Do you have a non-electric can-opener? Do you already own some sturdy walking shoes? A backpack?
The article even makes some valid observations.

Is there stuff you should probably definitely have access to in your home?
Sure. Copies of personal identification documents. Prescription medications. A good whistle. Lightsticks.
Water purification tech. A crowbar. (The time you need a crowbar is the time you really, really need a crowbar.)

Water purification is key. You can survive quite a while without food, if you aren’t trying to march 20 miles a day. But you need water.
One of my choices is the Lifestraw. But then I have both a cistern and a pond on my property. So I have quite a bit of water. It just needs to be purified before I can drink it. (I also have other filtration systems, but this is one I like, since if I need to evacuate, I can take it with me.)
One life straw will filter 4000 liters of water. It isn’t a perfect solution, but it is better than what most people have. The Big Berkey System is on my list of things to buy. (But that list is actually quite long right now.)
I think it actually does a better job removing parasites, but I would have to redo some research. If you live in an area where you can expect rain, you can catch quite a bit of water with a clean tarp, you just need containers to put it in.
Also I’m willing to bet most people can’t start a fire, since no one smokes anymore, no one carries matches. (Flint and steel. Fire piston. Waterproof matches. Lighters.)

Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance!

How damned hard is it to put a week’s worth of canned goods (vegetables, canned meats) potatoes, and rice back for emergencies?
How hard is it to maintain stock on those items?
Same thing with dog food. Buy 4-5 cases or a 40 pound bag of dried dog food and rotate that shit out.
Dogs have to eat too.
People are screaming because they can’t find bottled water on the shelves.
How about going to Tractor Supply and buying 2-3 of those blue 5 gallon cans and filling them up? Tap water may not taste that great but it ain’t going to kill you unless you live in Eastern Kentucky or West Virginia. I’ve got mine out in my shed.
What about gas? I never ever let myself get below a tank’s worth of gas in cans in the shed and a half a tank in the truck.
That pipeline mess in Alabama a while back taught me a lesson – you couldn’t find gas in Macon County for several days after that happened and I didn’t have but 10 gallons in cans.
Now I try to keep my truck full and I’ve got 30 gallons in cans that I rotate out monthly, plus I’ve got a full tank in my generator.
If I had to jump in the truck and escape some emergency right now, I could drive 800 miles before I even had to start thinking about getting gas.
If we were stuck here and couldn’t get away, I could survive for months with the food we’ve got here.
My biggest inconvenience would be running out of Copenhagen because I only keep a roll on hand at any given time, but that’ll last me a month.
Gotta think ahead, people. Sure, you may not be able to afford to buy all that stuff at once, so piecemeal it together by buying a little at a time.
Go to the Save-a-lot or some other discount store and buy off-brand canned goods at half the price of Del Monte and other name brands.
It’ll taste just fine when you’re hungry.
I’ve always preached buying a box of ammo every week to build up a stockpile. The same thing applies to food and other essentials.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is REAL! Professor Shoots Himself in Protest of Trump

Evidence strongly suggests the loon professor intended on killing himself, taping a $100 bill on the school’s bathroom mirror which read, “for the janitor.” Apparently the aftermath of the shooting was to be so gory that he felt bad for the clean-up person. Alas, his firearm ability only managed a shot to his arm.
Before we get to the story I want to say that, sadly, Trump Derangement Syndrome is real, and the afflicted are a real danger. This guy brought an illegal gun into the school. There’s really no telling what he was capable of doing. It is time to take this disease seriously, and the first step is awareness.

At iOTW report we want to do our part and recognize an organization that is spreading the word about this mental disorder.

I believe it is a national security issue.
Be a good citizen and display the ribbon. Put it on your car. Put it on your mailbox. Wear it on your shirt. Send the ribbon to the people in your life that may be afflicted, signaling to them that you support them and are hoping they get the help they need.
Tell them that you don’t want them to be desperate, in a bathroom with a gun, because they might accidentally shoot a Trump supporter, and that wouldn’t be good.
Go HERE to get your stickers. Keep them in your wallet and hand them to people when they go into their spittle-flecked rants, inanely disparaging the best president this country has seen in decades.
(Full disclosure: This project has been initiated by an iOTWreport reader who wants to remain anonymous. We are happy to publicize this project for them and if you are a blogger, tweeter, facebooker, etc., we encourage you to do the same.)
Review Journal-
Mark J. Bird was charged last month with discharging a gun within a prohibited structure, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and possessing a dangerous weapon on school property, court records show.
He was found bleeding from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his arm about 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 28 outside a bathroom in the Charleston campus K building.
The sociology professor was hired Aug. 26, 1993, and was an emeritus faculty member at the time of the shooting, college spokesman Richard Lake said. Bird was not scheduled to teach any courses during the fall 2018 semester.
Bird was employed with the college as of Tuesday, although Lake said it was not clear what disciplinary actions, if any, would be taken against him.
A 911 call was made after several CSN employees and at least one student saw Bird stumble out of the bathroom, bleeding, before he collapsed, the report said.
None of the witnesses — who later told police they only recalled hearing “a loud noise” — initially knew that Bird was armed and had shot himself, according to the report.
One college employee told police that he held Bird’s hand to calm him down as others tried to stop the bleeding. While waiting for authorities to arrive, Bird said he had shot himself in protest of President Donald Trump, police noted in their report. The report did not elaborate.

________________________________     Having seen a few suicides in my life.
Here is a little bit of advice. Mind you I am not condoning this or saying that you should do this!
But the only really effective way to do this follow these simple rules
A. Be Sober as booze really effects your aim a lot!
B. Do it outside as it is a lot easier to clean up afterward. But I have to give Bonus points for leaving a Tip. That did show some class!
C. Use the right gun that you have some experience with!
D. I suggest using any caliber above size of the 44 caliber.
E. That and if possible use either hollow points or semi wad cutters. Since they seem to ricochet less and lessen the chances of taking out somebody else. As the bullet might otherwise hit somebody else by accident.
F. Place the gun under the jaw, then press up & toward the back of your throat.
G. Squeeze the trigger don’t jerk it or you might miss!
H. When you get to Hell as a Suicide. (Hey, it is a Mortal Sin in most religions!)  Don’t be a pussy because you belong here now for all eternity. So be a man and act like one!You idiot!
By the way, most of your friends and family are going to be really pissed off at you. Even if you do write the Suicide Note of all time.
Since most Folks hate Cowards & because most suicides are a cowardly acts of a very selfish & self centered jerk.

Doctor shoots himself dead while checking to see why his gun wasn’t working during celebratory gunfire at Turkish wedding By SARA MALM

A doctor has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while checking a misfiring gun at a wedding in Turkey.

Hasan Akdemir, 39, had been using a handgun to fire off celebratory shots in the air during the ceremony near the central Turkish city of Konya.

However, the weapon did not fire properly, and Dr Akdemir stopped to check why the gun was not working.

The gun went off in his hand and Dr Akdemir, a GP, ended up shooting himself in the head.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident amidst early reports that the gun misfired.

Eyewitnesses say Dr Akdemir pulled the gun from his belt and started firing shots into the air during the wedding in the town of Kozagac on the edge of the city.

When it did not fire properly, he held it up to check it, which is when witnesses say he ended up shooting himself in the head.

An ambulance was called to rush him to the Atasehir State Hospital, but despite doctors’ best efforts, he could not be saved.

Konya is Turkey’s seventh biggest city in Turkey with a thriving economy that has seen it ranked among the country’s ‘boomer cities’.
