My friend shooting my Weatherby .460 Magnum the first time

Now I like to pretend that I know about shooting High Power Rifles. But let me tell you fellow gin lovers. That the 460 is a whole different breed of cat. I.E. it has a recoil that will never leave your memory.

Now i understand that Old Roy had a thing about speed and “improving” already existing calibers. But that is another story for another day. Plus if one is lucky enough to be able to go to Africa. That the locals have some very smart laws about what calibers that will be allowed when going after the Big Guys. (Lion, Rhino, Cape Buffalos etc. etc.)

Because it does not help their Tourism industry if a constant of Body Bags is being sent to the homeland & reported  on the local news. But enough of that.

Moving on. I also understand that the average American Male. Also wants the biggest, toughest that he can get when it comes to almost anything. So of course the 460 fills that niche. Because realistically that while there are a few other rifles that are bigger in Caliber. But their numbers are few and far between.

Plus the expense of buying one enters the rarefied atmosphere of British or Arab Royalty, Drug Lords, Hedge Fund Managers, Rock Stars and others. Who can buy one with their petty cash or their Platinum Credit Cards. Unlike Folks like me for example.

The other issue that comes to my feeble mind is one of Plebian Practicality. In that unless one resides in say in the outback Alaska. There really isn’t any game that would requires such a big gun like the 460. Plus comes the issues of getting more ammo for Big Bertha. That and I kind of doubt that Big AL’s Trading Post in back of beyond Alaska is going to have much 460 ammo for sale. But if Al does you know that he is going to have to charge you a very tidy sum for it.

Ditto for reloading stuff for it also. Because one has to remember that all of his stuff has to come out of state. With a huge transportation costs having to be added to the basic price.

Now having said all that and Thanks for reading my long winded sermon about the 460. If I lived in Alaska, personally myself I would use either a good 30-06 with the heaviest bullet that is offered. Or if i really needed a very heavy hitter. Then I would go with the Old Classic – The 35 Whelen. The reason being that with these two fine calibers. Is that I know that I will have a better chance of hitting the target with them. Than I would with the 460. Thanks for reading this!! Grumpy
