Been there twice. Once as a kid in the 70’s & then much later on. When the sub left for a mission, they would be gone for months & every nook & cranny was filled with food. They packed the head with canned food & ate that first. Until they emptied out the head, the crew had to ‘go to the can,’ which is where the saying comes from.
